Adam Williamson
London based and award winning sculptor, Adam Williamson, has undertaken a long list of prestigious commissions. These include projects for HRH the Prince of Wales, the University of Oxford, Shakespeare's Globe, Kew Gardens, Westminster Abbey, the Pakistan Embassy, and London Zoo to name a few.
His work is profoundly inspired and governed by the universal principles existing in the natural world. His works are characterised by the marriage of high craftsmanship with minimal design. Since 2010 Adam has regularly visited Jamaica working as a consultant for an on-going project by The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts to enable local craftsmen and woodcarvers to start a business. In 2013 he also undertook consultancy work in China and Azerbaijan with a focus on preserving traditional craft skills in those areas.
He has contributed a chapter on Islimi (Arabesque) in the book 'Arts and Crafts of the Islamic Lands'. Adam works from his studio in London and continues to teach at The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts.
The hand carved stucco wall panel offered in this sale echoes the traditional vegetal and floral arabesque designs from the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain - see video below.
The Queen Mother died in March 2002, at the age of 101. A hand carved memorial plaque was produced by Adam to commemorate the long friendship with the community of Canisbury near the Castle of Mey one of the Queen Mother’s favourite retreats. The slate memorial is installed at the church in Canisbay, where the Queen Mother used to worship.
