Muhammad Hobe

South African born Muhammad Hobe graduated from the Waterfall Islamic Institute Johannesburg in 2004. During this period in his spare time he would often practise calligraphy. In 2007 whilst serving as a teacher he met Turkish calligrapher Hilal Kazan.

Hilal took a liking to his calligraphy and recommended him to study in Istanbul under a master. Muhammad subsequently moved to Istanbul and studied under the grand master of Arabic calligraphy Hasan Çelebi from whom he received his license (ijaza) in Thuluth and Naskh scripts.

Muhammad currently lives in Istanbul with his wife where he is still studying and creating magnificent works of calligraphy.

In the above documentary, Muhammad recounts the story of a young African man from the townships of South Africa that fell in love with the art of calligraphy and how that love changed his life forever. He is one of the first Africans to receive the ijaza (license) in the sacred art of calligraphy from the world-renowned grand master calligrapher Hasan Çelebi.
