Samira Mian
Samira Mian is a budding artist and experienced educator with a passion for Islamic geometry. With over twelve years of experience in teaching mathematics at secondary school, Samira has been able to share her passion for the compass and straight edge constructions of Islamic geometric patterns in the UK, abroad and online over the past six years.
Her connection to this art form is on three levels. Firstly, it is an immensely satisfying pursuit, from analysing and constructing the patterns, to painting them in watercolours and gouache. Secondly, teaching others and bringing this art form to a wider audience. Lastly, celebrating the rich intellectual heritage of the Islamic Lands, to be part of its revival and education is of huge importance to Samira.
She regularly leads workshops for adults at The Cass Art Spaces in Islington, Kingston, Manchester, as well as Harrow Arts Centre and SOAS University. Her experience as a secondary school maths teacher has enabled her to work with and run workshops in schools, mosques, the Royal Institution, the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and local galleries, charities and arts organisations.
Samira’s online courses teach 2,500 students in 95 countries as well as plenty of content via social media platforms and YouTube. Being part of the wider Islamic Arts community has taken her to teach abroad in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Spain.
